Medical and Psychological Research Evidence...

After fifty years of biomedical and psychological research into how stress damages human health — and how humans can protect themselves — the consistently strongest finding continues to be:
Regular, daily meditation guards your health.
Exercise, diet, social support, coping skills... Yes, those are important. But the most powerful benefits to sound mind and body continue to be reaped by regular, deep meditation.
Examples of some of the key findings about how stress damages — and how meditation protects — are summarized on our other web page:

What is this ‘meditation’ stuff?

The word meditation is often used as if synonymous with its Greek root, to think. But the practice of meditation as a method of achieving peace of mind refers to a systematic, scientifically-reproducible approach to directing the mind and body to work together optimally. Most commonly such meditation uses several strategies that draw of common skills such as: deep relaxation, mental focus, regularized breathing, visualization, and cognitive redirection.
Not inherently religious
The honing of such skills has long been a part of spiritual communities of Christian monastics, Buddhist adherents, and East Indian yoga practitioners because the methods can be used to prepare the mind to redirect itself from daily worries to spiritual quests. Today many westerners appreciate the benefits of meditative skills for their ability to relieve modern mental burdens and speed the healing of physical disorders — so the methods can appeal even to people who have no interest at all in spiritual pursuits.

For Beginners

This basic introduction does not require any previous experience with meditation, yoga, or even relaxation. It is designed especially for complete beginners.
Some experienced meditators do find that this return to very basic principles is helpful to them, too, especially the strategies for remaining simultaneously relaxed and alert during longer meditations.
All are welcome.

About the instructor

Richard Pinneau, Ph.D., first discovered the benefits of meditation through his work with biofeedback — where biomedical equipment demonstrates how the slightest change in mental processing has an impact (damaging or healing) on the body.
During the last 25 years he has studied numerous approaches to meditation and pull together the most universally effective methods into his courses.
