TOP PRIORITY: Locating bilingual Puebloans who might be interested to train community members
[ and some who might want to become trainers of trainers! ]

Notes from MHA-Pueblo Community Relations: Bilingualism Meeting 5/30/2008:
Present: Anne Courtright, Eleanor Hamm, Jayne Mazur, Don Bruestle, Jodee Hankins, Richard Pinneau

News on two fronts:
1) Developing advocacy/mentoring within Spanish-speaking communities
2) Supporting the training of bilingual mental health professionals

Much of the time was spent on the Mentoring/Advocacy programs being develop through Pueblo Suicide Prevention Center (PSPC).

THE INSPIRATION:
Eleanor described an incident demonstrating how much more quickly and effectively community needs can be addressed when a fluent and respected community member becomes the conduit for information exchange.

THE VISION:
1) To support mentors/advocates/sensitive listeners within community
so who are in good positions to detect people at risk for suicide and offer referrals
to most effective sources for services. [ "ASSIST" training pgm ]
2) To develop trainers-of-trainers who are bilingual and can train mentors
*in Spanish*.

NEXT STEPS:
1) PSPC will offer inexpensive 2-day training in ASSIST twice in Pueblo in next months:
July 10 & 11; September 29 & 30. ($25/two days)
We would like to encourage bilingual individuals with community interest to register.
Do you have individuals to recommend. We thought of:
Police Sgt Frank Ortega & Liz Velez & Nick Rodriguez (anyone have his email?)
If they get enthused about this training, they might want to pursue:
2) Denver "Train the trainers" that will involve nation "master-trainer" of ASSIST.
With completion of that t-t-t training, they would be qualified to offer the ASSIST
training (and get some compensation for it, not just serve as volunteers)
3) Having "Train the trainers" people in Pueblo who are bilingual would enable them to
offer ASSIST training to Spanish-speaking-only individuals in the community.

FUTURE PLANS:
1) Once we have a core of trainers with ASSIST knowledge, PSPC can offer additional
trainings to add special skills and knowledge beyond those for Suicide Risk, e.g.:
domestic violence, substance abuse, etc.

MIGHT YOU WANT TO BE A TRAINER? OR MEMBER OF YOUR STAFF:
Please RSVP that you can meet with us on June 20th, 9:30am at my office (see below):
Are you are one of your staff bilingual and possibly interested to be a trainer?
RSVP: training@puebloserves.org

UPDATES:
Eleanor/Jodee/Jayne: Please correct any of the above and send me links to explanations/details,
I'll get corrected versions on PuebloServes so it's all in one place
(links to explain ASSIST, QPR, press release on your summer ASSIST trainings, etc
would all be helpful.)
I've posted this basic info and will keep details posted atop PuebloServes.org
