Area teens will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with writing techniques designed to stimulate creativity and hone fiction-writing skills as part of a week-long Authors’ Institute for Teen Writers sponsored by the Southern Colorado Writing Project (SCWP), the Pueblo City-County Library District, and the Pueblo Automobile Dealers Association in June. The Authors’ Institute will be held from 10 a.m. - noon on June 9 through 13 at the Rawlings Public Library Ryals Room (4th Floor), 100 E. Abriendo Ave.

The Authors’ Institute is an intensive writing workshop designed to allow area teens to explore their creativity as they study writing techniques and polish their skills in accordance with the National Writing Project Summer Institute model. Licensed teachers who are also Southern Colorado Writing Project Teacher-Consultants experienced in writing and the teaching of writing will conduct the Authors’ Institute.

Need-based financial aid may be available to qualified applicants based on free or reduced lunch schedules. The Institute is limited to 15 participants.

The Southern Colorado Writing Project (www.scwponline.org) is an affiliate of the National Writing Project (www.nwp.org), and as a professional development organization for K through 20 teachers from all disciplines functions according to two basic principles: the best teachers of teachers are other teachers, and the best teachers of writing are writers themselves. SCWP is directed by Dr. Katherine Frank, CSU-Pueblo chair of English and Foreign Languages, and is supported by federal funding, and funds committed through CSU-Pueblo, Pueblo City Schools, Pueblo School District #70, and the Pueblo Automobile Dealers Association. The SCWP is devoted to providing quality professional development opportunities for southern Colorado teachers and improving literacy efforts within the community.
