Arc of Pueblo to host poker run on June 22
By JESSI POSPAHALA
The Pueblo Chieftain
Playing poker has never been this good.
The Arc of Pueblo will have its inaugural "Ride the Arc" poker run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 22 to help raise funds for those with developmental disabilities. Sponsored by the Pueblo Bikers United, the event will involve several Pueblo businesses.
All proceeds will go to Pueblo Advocacy and Guardianship, Hope for Children, Kid Konnection, and People First of Pueblo.
Arc of Pueblo Executive Director Stephanie Garcia said motorists can pick up one playing card, for a $10 fee, at these locations: Pueblo Convention Center, Giodone's Restaurant, Outpost Harley-Davidson, Kickers and Greenway and Nature Center.
Players can upgrade their poker hand at the final stop, Kickers, 141 S. Purcell Blvd.
The person holding the best poker hand will receive $300; second, $200; and third, $100.
A dinner, dance, and live music by Sam Man and the Apes will be available at Kickers from 5 to 8 p.m.
"It's an opportunity to ride through the community, help raise money for a good cause, and have a chance to win great prizes," Garcia said.
Ramona Trujillo, Bikers United board member, said the group already sponsors 22 nonprofit agencies in Pueblo. But Arc has a special place in her heart.
In January 1999, Trujillo's 18-month-old grandson, Jace Martinez, died of a developmental disability.
"It's an overwhelming and helpless kind of feeling as a mom," she said.
With little support from the insurance company, Trujillo said, local bikers helped raise money to pay for her grandson's medical costs.
She's hoping local bikers will "show their big hearts again" and ride the poker run on Saturday.
"Whether you are on a bike or in a truck we want you to come," Garcia said.
